The Ceres series stamps were the first French stamps, issued in 1849. In Roman mythology, Ceres is the goddess of growing plants.
The stamp was drawn by Jacques-Jean Barre, general engraver at the Paris Mint that also engraved bank notes, medals and other postage stamps.
