Three new stamps for Second Class Domestic are adorned with exciting geometric figures. “The feel is a mix between architectural precision and organic undulations”, says the designer, Fideli Sundqvist, in an interview on the next page. In the interview, she discusses how she worked on this project and the currently rare art form she uses, paper cutting.
Interview with the Designer of the stamps Fideli Sundqvist:
“An excellent creation.” This was how a review described Fideli Sundqvist’s debut book, Birre, var är du (Birre, where are you), which was released in the spring and is about a puppy that runs away. She has both written the text and drawn the illustrations. The story won first prize in the 2010 children’s book competition held by the publishing company, Opal.
“An excellent creation” would also be a good word to describe her debut stamps, Geometric Figures, which swing between architectural precision and organic undulations. All of the stamps are exciting at many different levels. She describes to the left/right how she developed the proofs.
Fideli Sundqvist (born in 1987) grew up in Uppsala with a pen in her hand and horses as her favorite motif. Inspired by her mother, who is a craftswoman and potter, Fideli Sundqvist chose the artistic road at an early age. As a teenager she attended Nyckelviksskolan on the island of Lidingö, a school of art, craft and design where many students are preparing to apply to the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design and the Royal University College of Fine Arts.
This move was a success. She was accepted at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design when she was 20 and received a Bachelor’s Degree in 2011 in Graphic Design and Illustration. Her thesis topic consisted of a collection of three-dimensional geometric models.
During her years at high school, she held an exhibition with a series of pictures about a boy who lived in a lighthouse. For this series she used as a medium not only linocut but also the unique technique she uses most today, paper cutting.
